| Warwick Shire Mayor, Ron Bellingham, has today moved to clarify Council’s position on tank rebates in the wake of a state-wide extension to the Home WaterWise Rebate Scheme. “Warwick Shire Council does not offer a tank rebate to residents, however, residents are able to access a tank rebate through the state government scheme,” Cr Bellingham said. Cr Bellingham’s comments are sparked by an escalation in the number of enquiries being fielded by Council staff in regard to the State’s Tank Rebate Scheme. “People using the hotline are being told by the State Government to call their Council about further tank subsidies, but Warwick Shire has no tank rebate scheme in place,” he said. “I understand that community support for improved water efficiency in Warwick Shire is strong, but Council feels there are many other simple ways for householders to save on water.” ”Switching to water efficient showerheads, toilets, gardens and front-loading washing machines all save much more water for less outlay.” “Even though rainwater tank rebate or incentive schemes have been adopted in a number of local authorities, rainwater tanks are widely considered to be among the most expensive water efficiency options available.” Mayor Bellingham said that Council would continue its education campaign on water use, and programs to reduce unaccounted-for water loss like leaks and unnecessary mains flushing. Under the Home WaterWise Rebate Scheme, a cash rebate of up to $1,000 is available to households in South East Queensland. Property owners can access the State Government rebates for rainwater tanks by calling 1800 243 585 or visiting www.nrm.qld.gov.au/water. |
