Brosnan's Bridge capable of 160 tonnes
Brosnan's Bridge near Killarney had seen better days: it's capacity had dropped to two tonnes...falling (and failing) fast. Last Wednesday was a pivotal point in the crossing's history, with eight 20 tonne bridge units lowered in place as part of a $300,000 project to build a new bridge. Work on the project, conducted by bridge contractors Mackay & Sons from Gyrnpie, began in August, and is expected to be completed either late this month weather permitting-or early in October. Project engineer Naurelle Black notes that while the bridge now looks like a bridge, work remaining to be done includes wingwalls, abutment walls and kerbing, followed by a bitumen seal and minor road repairs. Work on the bridge is now complete!
