The Killarney township is full of old world charm. The houses are mostly classic Queenslanders. The Killarney Co-op is a feature of our town. The Co-op was established 87 years ago. Now it boasts a large modern supermarket, hardware and electrical goods store plus garage and service station. Early Irish settlers named the town after their home in Ireland. Killarney was surveyed in 1878. Rich in mixed farming, Killarney produces meat, potatoes, onions, grain and timber. The Heritage Centre (open weekends) specialises in family history research and is based in the RSL Hall in Acacia Street. It has a grand collection of local historical photos, articles and small artefacts. In days past, local bullock teams hauled timber logs to one of the earliest sawmills in Queensland. This dangerous descent, involving 14 river crossings still remains and is a popular tourist drive. Brown's Falls, with its picnic area and playground, is near one of the earliest curved bridges built in Queensland. A short stroll takes you to the base of the falls. Just beside the road is the scenic lookout whre you see the plummeting water of Daggs Falls. Queen Mary Falls, this spectacular waterfall is the jewel in the crown of the Queen Mary Falls National Park where Spring Creek tumbles dramatically over a 40 metre cliff to the sparkling pool below. There is a short, easy walk to the lookout at the top of the falls. BBQ facilities, bushwalks, convenient amenities and afternooon bird feeding ensure this is a great place to soak up nature's beauty.
